Q&A with Goodreads!
#SevenWholeNights was a test. Most of my books exceed 400 pages. I wanted to see if I could write something compelling in less than 100. I've been working on improving my writing process in an attempt to be more deliberate with story arcs and pacing. In the end, I wanted to know if I get the reader interested in the primary characters in a shorter format. Could I push myself with the level of erotic content and depictions? We'll see if my experiment proves successful-either way, I'm learning and growing as a writer.
I'm actually taking a break to promote the books. My website has a section that lists future titles/concepts that are in "my queue." I try to do at least two books per year. I've accomplished that. Who knows? I may get another spark and be off on another adventure.
Just write. Find time, whether its five minutes or five hours-write. This is how you hone your skills. Even if you don't sell a single book, you must embrace your craft. Strengthen the areas of weakness and celebrate your strengths. But more important, be prepared to listen so that you can find your own voice.
Creating a familiar world with relatable characters that share a common emotional space with the reader. Even in the most escapist genres, we should see our truths and our struggles. Writers can provide this.
I focus on the emotional space I'm trying to capture and step away from the actual writing. I listen to music that best captures the mood or sentiment and I let the characters or scenario form until I'm ready to write again. Once that happens, I'm back to the writing.
